Nate Wood

Nate started his career as a luthier in 2011, after graduating from Roberto-Venn School of Lutherie in Phoenix, Arizona. He worked briefly at a local music store in Utah before apprenticing under Ryan Thorell, building archtop and flattop acoustic guitars. In 2014 he relocated to Portland, Oregon, where he was the in-house luthier at Old Town Music until 2017. Previous clients include Jesse Dayton, Portugal. The Man, Yeasayer, Jason Walton (Agalloch), The Shivas, Mac DeMarco, R.I.P., and Nathan Anderson (Fruit Bats, M. Ward), many private collectors, and guitar shops across the Pacific Northwest. He now lives in Springfield, Oregon with his badass wife, cat, dog, and chickens. He's been mentioned in Premier Guitar and has been a guest on the Fretboard Journal Podcast. As a guitar maker, he is represented by Zen Guitar in the United States and AlnicoFive Guitars in the UK. He can also be contacted directly for commissions.

Luthier Skype Consultation, Hourly

$50.00

I offer consultation regarding the business of instrument repair.

Unsure how to get established now that you've graduated from Roberto-Venn or some other lutherie school? Want to know the biggest obstacles you'll likely face, and how to prepare for them?

Some of the most important things you'd normally learn by experience are what NOT to do.

You can save yourself a lot of emotional and financial pain by avoiding these actions. Trust me, I've compiled quite a list of things you shouldn't do. I've run my own businesses in two states and three cities, over the course of more than a decade.

My advice and methods won't make you an overnight success. I can't make you a cybernetic super hero. Getting good at this job- or any job- takes years. I'm not coaching you to a 6 figure business if you live in a small town. Anyone who claims they can do this for you is a liar, or is selling something that will not benefit you and your community.

What I can help you do:

-Acknowledge real-world opportunities and limitations for your business.

-Get a small lutherie business started (I don't advise on retail operations).

-Develop strategies to grow your business organically and ethically (no used car salesman bullshit or pyramid marketing methods here). I only assist in honest, hardworking growth that benefits you and your community. Why would you want to grow in any other way?

-Work through a rut in your small lutherie business.

Let's get together and figure this out. I've got years of experience in this realm. You can do it.

What my clients are saying:

"Nate is a great guitar tech. He has set up hundreds of guitars for us, and has a keen eye for all the details. The best tech in the Eugene area!" - Hank, via Google

"This is the most welcoming and helpful shop I've been to in town. I had them ream the bridge of my acoustic guitar for new bridge pins and they did a fantastic job at a very reasonable price. If you want to steer clear of the guitar snobs and chain stores, this is absolutely your place." - Jared, via Google

"Nate took care of my 78 RD like it was a newborn. Stainless steel refret, gutted and replaced electronics with one of the most professional wiring/wire management jobs i've ever seen. He's great and deserves all of your money." - Tyler, via Google
